For safe and comfortable heating it is imperative that you choose the proper unit for your woodstove or fireplace. The following chart indicates the proper unit for your application.

For Woodstoves:
- Simply multiply the inside width of the stove by the inside depth(front to back) of the stove.
- Refer to the column below labeled "For Woodstove Smallest Hearth Area Allowed" to select the safe unit(s).

For example, if your stove has an inside width and depth of 20" and 14", the hearth area is 280 square inches (20 X 14). The only units which are approved for less than 280 square inches are 6117 (192in.),
6147 (244in.) and 5147 (244in.). Of these units select the largest one that will fit through the door and inside the stove.

For Fireplaces:
Refer to last two columns for proper unit selection.

Prometheus Pellet Fuel Basket

Frequently Asked Questions

Back toTop

How do you light the Prometheus?
Half fill the basket with fuel and place several pieces of a standard starter block underneath the basket. Ignite the starter blocks and within minutes the fuel will be burning. When there are significant flames fill the basket for optimal burn. Starter blocks are readily available at hardware stores, department stores, groceries stores and hearth shops.

How long will it burn?
In a woodstove we have seen two hours to twelve hour burn periods depending on the air settings in the stove. In a fireplace you will get approximately two hours of burn time if your damper is wide open.

How many units are there?
We are currently offering six sizes to accommodate most stoves and fireplaces. The attatched chart shows which Prometheus is best suited to the stove or fireplace.

What about safety? Will it burn too hot?
The Prometheus has been safety tested to applicable UL/ULC standards. In fact due to the smaller size of the basket relative to the firebox you will get less extreme temperatures when using the Prometheus compared to dry cord wood.

How do I fill the Prometheus when it is hot?
Fuel can easily be added at any time by use of a common grain scoop, ash shovel as well as many other non combustible containers.

Availability
We are currently shipping product across the United States and Canada. If you are US consumer please e-mail us and we'll pass along your name to a local dealer. Also please tell us the stove dealers in your area in case we are not aware of them.

Does it matter what pellet fuel I use?
Pellet quality is more important with a pellet stove than with the Prometheus but you will get better performance with higher quality fuel. In terms of ash content, the industry standard for premium grade fuel is less than 1.0% ash. Energex Pellet Fuel averages approx. 0.5% ash or 3.2 ounces from a 40 pound bag. This is dramatically less than the ash residue from heating with cordwood. The BTU value of the fuel you choose is also important. Energex has one of the highest heat outputs in North America with an average BTU value of approx. 8,990 per pound. Our moisture content averages 5%-6%. You want pellet fuel that is less than 8% moisture. Energex Pellet Fuel is readily available throughout the Northeast United States and from Ontario to Nova Scotia.

Can I use cordwood with the Prometheus basket?
Absolutely not! The Prometheus has been safety tested for use with 100% wood pellets and the use of any other fuel source would void your warranty and more importantly could cause an over heating situation. If you want to use cordwood, wait for the stove and Prometheus to cool, remove the basket and then use cordwood but never use them together.

The sizing chart says I can’t use a model that I know will fit in my stove. Can I use it anyway?
No!!! It is crucial that you never use an over sized basket in your woodstove or fireplace. The baskets are specially designed to hold a given quantity of fuel and your woodstove can safely handle the heat generated by the combustion of this volume of pellets. However, if you use a Prometheus that was not intended for your stove you will void your Prometheus warranty, your stove warranty and potentially create a hazard in your home. The Prometheus is very safe when used properly. But never use a basket that is larger than the one (s) recommended in the sizing chart, owners manual or on the product packaging.

Why do the flames eventually disappear?
When you first light the fuel in the Prometheus you go through the initial stages of combustion with smoke building up. When enough of the fuel is lit you get bigger flames and more heat and the combustion gases are ignited. After the first 5 minutes you get a clean burning fire. Eventually, the burn goes into a clean burning charcoal stage where many of the gases have been driven off and most of the fuel remaining is charcoal. There are less visible flames at this point but the fuel continues to burn. If you put more fresh fuel on top the flames will reappear.

Do I have to change my stove installation to accommodate the Prometheus?
No changes are required in your stove or venting. The important thing is buying the proper size based on the sizing charts.

Do I need a fan or auger?
No. Nothing needs to be added to your stove or fireplace except the Prometheus basket.

Products

The Prometheus
Energex recently introduced a new product to burn pellet fuel in woodstoves and fireplaces. Baskets are sized to hold 10 to 25 pounds of pellet fuel and will provide 2 to 12 hours of effective heat without refueling. Pellets start easily and burn with attractive flames in just minutes. Air flows through chamber dividers in the basket for a more efficient burn. The pellet fuel basket turns woodstove and fireplace owners into pellet fuel burners.

Why Buy The PROMETHEUS?
No more stacking, splitting, hauling, bugs, bark, or mess associated with cordwood. Year round availability of fuel. No need to buy a years supply of fuel at one time. Fuel consistency from coast to coast.

Prometheus has recently been safety tested to comply with applicable sections of UL907, UL737, UL1482, UL127,ULC S627 and ULC S610.

Premium Grade Residential Pellet
Energex manufactures premium grade wood pellet fuel for use in residential pellet stoves and furnace/ boilers, as well as woodstoves and fireplaces fitted with Prometheus, the pellet fuel basket (see below). Energex's pellet fuel is made from clean, softwood sawdust with no additives and no bark. Our pellets have a BTU value of 8,990 BTUs per pound, ash content less than .58%, and moisture content of 5% to 6%. There are no sulfur emissions from the pellet fuel. The pellets are packaged in sealed 40 lb. and 20 lb. plastic bags and palletized with a plastic "hood" leaving a tight, weather resistant product. The pellet exceeds the Pellet Fuel Institute's premium grade standard.

Top

Industrial Pellet
The industrial pellet fuel manufactured by Energex is made from a mix of sawdust and bark with an ash content averaging 3%. The product is shipped in bulk or packaged in 40 lb. bags. The industrial pellet can be burned in suspension after pulverizing or in firepots. Oil or gas boilers can easily be retrofitted for pellets. Because pellets have a low moisture content, constant steam or hot water output can be maintained. Industry and institutions including schools use pellet fuel to lower costs and to hedge against oil and gas price spikes.
